Crochet Tutorial: Sunburst Granny Square

Sunburst Granny Square so appropriate for the season. So I thought I should make a tutorial on this one. I made one about the basic Granny Square before, and now, here is this beautiful Sunburst Granny Square. I feel in love with Granny Squares and I think there will be more tutorial with different granny squares in the future.

You can use any type of yarn and hook in making this Granny Square but for this Tutorial, I am using a Worsted Yarn and an H Hook.
Materials
  • Yarn Worsted #4 (Red Heart With Love) in 3 Colors
  • H/4.00mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors

Terms Used

  • CH(s) - Chain(s)
  • HDC - Half Double Crochet
  • DC - Double Crochet
  • TC - Treble/Triple Crochet
Notes:
  • It is better to cut the yarn in every yarn and weave in the ends.

Instructions

Round 1. Make Magic Ring or Start with Chain 4. Then Chain 3 for Magic Ring (count as a stitch), and into the ring make 15 DC. Closed the ring tightly and join with a slip stitch on top of the beginning CH3.  (16 DC including the beginning CH 3.) Fasten off and weave in all ends, change color.

Round 2.  Attached new color in between the stitches of Round 1, not in a stitch but the in-between space on those DCs. Just attached anywhere you are comfortable. The picture below is how I attached my yarn.

Insert hook in the same place as you attached the yarn and pull up a loop. *Yarn over and insert hook again and pull up a loop again*. Do this 3 times, until you have 7 loops on your hook.
Yarn over and pull through all loops.** CH1 to secure the puff stitch. * Yarn over, insert hook into the next in-between space and pull up a loop* Do this 3 times until you have 7 loops on your loop. Yarn over again and pull through all loops. **Repeat this process on each in between spaces all the way around until the end of the round. (16 puff stitches)

Cut off yarn and fasten off.

Round 3. Attached another Color of yarn. CH 2, yarn over insert hook into the same space, pull up a
loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Yarn over again, insert back to the same space, pull up a loop.

Yarn over and pull through two loops (3 loops on hook). Yarn over once again and pull through all loops.

**CH2, yarn over insert hook into the next space, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. *Yarn over and insert hook back to the same space, pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.* Repeat one more time, leaving 4 loops on hook. Yarn over once again and pull through all loops.** Repeat this process in each space between all around until the end. (16 clusters)

Cut yarn and weave in all ends.

Round 4.  Attached new yarn. CH 3 (count as a stitch), 2 DC in the same space. *3 TC in the next space, CH3 and 3 TC in the same space(this will create a corner in your granny square). 3 DC in the next space, 3 HDC in next, 3 DC in next* Repeat this all the way around until the end. You'll end with 3 HDC since you started with the DC group.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

It is better if you block this granny square for the sides to be straighter. Then you can make anything from this square. A blanket, bag, I even saw a hat made with granny squares.

This post was quite long. I hope that I was able to make it clear how to make this Sunburst Granny Square, especially for beginners.

Hope you enjoy this tutorial at the same time learned something. And also don't forget to Tag me on Instagram and Twitter also like my Page on Facebook, Si Nanay Madel. I would love to see what you've done and Pin it also on Pinterest.
